Oguzhan joined the lab in 2017 and he is a current postdoctoral researcher in the lab. He was born in Izmir, Turkey to an amazing family. Due to his father’s job, he moved all around Turkey until he started his undergraduate studies in Middle East Technical University at Ankara. There he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics. During that time, he participated in several research projects from polymer chemistry to RNA biology, as well as organized many conferences including Turkey Evolutionary Biology Conference which aimed to promote evolution research and awareness in Turkey. After obtaining his master’s degree in the same university, he set off on his journey to Sydney in order to perform his PhD studies with John Mattick and Eva Novoa at the Garvan Institute. After enjoying the beautiful Australia for a year, he moved to the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona with Eva, where he is still reluctant to leave. His PhD work included systematic characterization of RNA modification machinery protein, and developing novel nanopore-based tools to detect RNA modifications and capture the variety of RNA molecules with their tail information. His current postdoctoral research includes resolving RNA secondary structure using a novel nanopore sequencing method. Oguzhan is passionate about travelling and sports including football, beach volleyball and gym, and he is an amateur film photographer. You can probably find him in a Mexican restaurant where he is drinking his Michelada.
