Eva is Junior Group Leader at the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Spain. She obtained her BSc in Biochemistry in 2007 and PhD in Biomedicine in 2012 in Barcelona (Spain). Supported by EMBO and HFSP postdoctoral fellowships, she first joined the Computational Biology laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and afterwards the RNA Biology laboratory at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Australia).

Since 2018, she has led the ‘Epitranscriptomics and RNA Dynamics’ lab at the CRG. Her laboratory is focused on deciphering the language of RNA modifications, and how its orchestration can regulate our cells in a space-, time- and signal-dependent manner. Her laboratory has been pioneer in the use of nanopore sequencing to study the epitranscriptome, including the development of novel algorithms to map and quantify RNA modifications (Liu et al., Nat Comm 2019; Begik et al., Nat Biotech 2021), as well as novel protocols and algorithms to systematically study the dynamics of RNA in a multiplexed and reproducible manner (Smith et al., Genome Res 2020; Begik et al., Nat Methods 2022). Her laboratory is now focused on applying these methods to decipher the biological functions of the ‘uncharted epitranscriptome’, which comprises 95% of the known RNA modifications for which so far transcriptome-wide methods have are missing, and thus have so far limited our ability to understand why their dysregulation is associated to human disease.

Eva Maria’s work has been awarded with grants from ERC (2022), AECC (2021), MERCK (2021), MICINN (2022; 2018), ARC (2018), HFSP (2014), EMBO (2013) and LaCaixa (2008). She has been awarded the Young Researcher Prize from the Catalan Society of Biology (2018) as well as the Fisher Scientific Prize (2013) and Young Investigator Prize (2023) from the Spanish Society of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and is a member of the EMBO Young Investigator Programme (EMBO YIP), among others.

From a personal side, she is the mum of 3 wonderful girls (one on the way!), loves playing beach volleyball (it must be love after more than 30 years playing…!), spending time with her friends and family, enjoying a glass of wine with good company, and travelling the world with a backpack.
