Anna joined Novoa Lab as a postdoctoral researcher in 2023. She is a molecular biologist primarily focused on the biology of non-coding RNA. Anna was born and raised in Arkhangelsk region off the icy shores of the White sea in the Russian north-west. She then moved to the banks of the more southern, however, still freezing Baltic sea to obtain her degree in medical physics at Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University. There she studied mechanical properties of the bacterial outer membrane using optical tweezers microscope. To pursue her further career in academia Anna entered Biomedical PhD program at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow. As a part of her PhD Anna spend several years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston performing research on long non-coding RNA involved in regulation of cancer cells. In the end of 2020 Anna defended her PhD thesis on previously undiscovered participation of long non-coding RNA Morrbid in the regulation of the alternative splicing in the liver cancer cells. She then moved to Saint Petersburg to dive into investigation of the interplay between long non-coding RNA and intrinsically disordered proteins in the formation of the phase separated membrane-less organelles, in particular stress granules and PML bodies. Driven by her passion for RNA biology Anna joined Novoa Lab and currently is involved into investigation of sperm RNA dynamics in intergenerational inheritance. As for her hobbies, Anna seems to enjoy the most anything that involves ‘riding’ any sorts of boards, getting in troubles while traveling, annoying her cats with too much of cuddling, and of course watching Gregor and Ivan playing Geoguesser during the lab breaks
