Born and raised in Rome, Sonia obtained her Bachelor degree at Sapienza University of Rome with a thesis on the detection of microRNAs in serum as biomarkers of colo-rectal cancer. In the same University, she obtained her Master Degree in Genetics and Molecular Biology with a thesis on RNA methylation in leukaemia. She also worked as a visiting student in the Epitranscriptomics lab at Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel), where she worked on RNA methylation in yeast. She joined the Novoa lab at CRG in 2018 for an internship in Bioinformatics and here she started her PhD funded by LaCaixa Foundation focusing on the characterization of RNA modification dynamics and function in neurons, carrying on both experimental and computational research. Sonia is also passionate about science dissemination and she has worked as an informal educator and as a guide to science exhibitions. 

As much as she may miss Rome, she seems to enjoy the bike lanes of Barcelona, the beach volleyball tournaments, the hikes in the mountains nearby and her beloved spanish cuisine.
